INTERNET SECURITY
SOFTWARE and PROBLEMS
There have been many advances in anti-virus software of
late, and much of this software now controls many other computer
functions including internet safety or even your recycle bin.
While these advances are great, we are still learning ourselves how to
configure this power to get the good points and yet no side affects.
In the mean time, we have had to shut them off at times to ensure other
computer functions still work. Some of the major things that we
have found are below. Of course, the user is advised that this
information is very limited - and only involves what to shut off.
The primary software company should have the best answer if you can
reach them.
ISSUES
NETWORK PRINTING
BLOCKED
We have seen network printing blocked using some of the
new anti-virus software. Since we do not know the controls to
prevent this, we find that we have to start the program and just turn
off "Security". You may not want to turn off security full time,
however, if your network printing is blocked, you may wish to try this
and see if it is your anti-virus software.
INTERNET ACCESS
BLOCKED
We have seen normal internet access blocked using
another anti-virus full featured program. We also found that in
this program that we were unable to set the preferences to allow us to
use the internet and just block "the bad guys". We unfortunately
had to shut this program off also except for the anti-virus portion.
If you are being blocked from internet access on your own legitimate
internet software, you may wish to check to see if your anti-virus
software is doing that.
VERY SLOW DELETE
PROCESS
Has your computer's delete process slowed down
considerably? Check to see if your new anti-virus software is now
controlling your recycle bin also. In the case that we are aware
of, the name of the recycle bin will have been changed. If you
wish this added protection that is offered and slower delete time is
fine with you, then of course you need to do nothing. However, if
the slow delete time bothers you, then you can right click on the newly
named recycle bin, and click on properties. Under that you might
be able to see options that can shut off the "extra" protection beyond
which Microsoft offers.
