IT IS PROVEN SCIENCE This is one of the nonsense phrases people may use to intimidate you into believing whatever they will say next. More similar phrases by clicking here. This is a phrase that I truly dislike, since it goes against the very grain of what Science really is, or at least should be. Science is a learning experience about what we know about the universe we live in. Each year, each hour, each minute, we learn more, and we often learn that what we believed before is not true at all. And so when one says something is "proven science" they seem to be suggesting that well, we now "know it all" and we will learn nothing tomorrow, so let us close the book on thinking and learning. And if we do close that book, then we will never be brighter than today. We can only go backwards. I once heard a politician on television say that something was "proven science" - as much as gravity is "proven science." Of course, since Political Science is not really science at all, that person did not seem to understand how silly that comparison was. At the time I am writing this, a number of scientists do not think we humans understand gravity yet. Oh, it seems to work find on earth, but it seems at times to operate differently in space where huge gravity from the event horizons of black holes or collapsed neutron stars that become magnetars have immense gravity. And some scientists think gravity should have a particle associated with it, just as there is an alpha particle associated with light. But they have as yet found no particle. And a huge laser measuring system called LIGO was built to measure gravity from outer space; and yet for a long time, it measured nothing. And there was no explanation for how some galaxy clusters hung together, and so a Swiss Astronomer Fritz Zwicky theorized that Dark Matter, which we cannot see, does exist and holds things together with a gravity like force. That theory held for awhile until recently some other scientists studying a local galaxy cluster said they seem to find no evidence of dark matter. And so the answer is ?? what? It seems that as I am writing, this, we perhaps... just don't know. Why is it some days we humans are just unable to say those magic words of, "Sorry.... We just don't know?" But the long and short of this is... if you hear the phrase from someone that something is "Proven Science" - it most likely means that person does not really understand science at all and would not be a good reference. If someone is trying to get another to try and take a drug, I would strongly advise not saying it is "proven science." That would not work on me, but perhaps get me to run in the other direction. If the drug has proven safe so far and has been a help, then that is what we should say. Something like, "So far, no ill side effects from this drug has been noted and it has helped in some percentage of the cases." There you go. Now that is real science. It is likely far closer to the truth. And it also does not require a time machine to even guess what we might learn in the future. And this time, even a real scientist, may also buy into whatever it is that you are selling - as long as you are totally honest of course.
