POLYPHONY MUSIC CHORD
|
POLYPHONY Polyphony means the maximum number of notes that can be played at one time. The term polyphony is often used, for example, for midi keyboards since electronic musicians are often very concerned how many notes can be played at once in a musical piece. There is something of a catch to this specification. Some sounds made by electronic keyboards may be a combination of two instrument sounds - and thus the number of polyphonic possibilities does not always mean the number of distinct notes - it may mean fewer distinct notes. If a particular midi "channel" (part), for example, is using a combinational multitimbral sound and is using 5 notes and has two distinctly combined multitimbral sounds, then the number of notes used would be 2 times 5 or ten notes used - even though one might think the answer is only 5 used. |
