BLACKJACK TERMS DICTIONARY

STIFF HAND

In the game of Blackjack, the term "stiff hand" means a hand that is less than 17 points yet is likely to bust, that is go over 21 points, if the player hits.  Common stiff hands are points counts of 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16.  Since the most common value card in blackjack is a ten valued card, there is chance that with any of those counts that a player might bust.

Of course, the object in blackjack is to beat the dealer.  If the dealer is showing a good card, a blackjack player may elect to hit a stiff hand anyway - since they believe the dealer would win anyway and they must take that chance.  Skill in blackjack is often knowing when to take a hit or when to stand on a play.
